Zimbabwe-Türkiye Bilateral Relations
The cordial relations between Zimbabwe and Türkiye are expected to be enhanced following the reciprocal opening of the Zimbabwean Embassy in Ankara in October 2019.
The signing of the 2018 Agreement on Trade and Economic Cooperation between Zimbabwe and Türkiye paves way to boost commercial ties between the two countries. There is great potential for increased bilateral trade. In 2013, Harare and Ankara signed a Bilateral Air Services Agreement which came into effect in 2017. This will result in improved movement between the peoples of the two nations.
Zimbabwe’s major exports to Türkiye include tobacco and tobacco products, raw hides and skins, mineral products ores and crafts. Zimbabwe’s main imports from Türkiye are machinery and mechanical appliances, automotives, textiles, medial and electrical equipment, chemicals and fertilizers.
At the private sector level, the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries CZI and Türkiye’s Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEIK) keep close contact by attending each other’s conferences where they also discuss business opportunities between the two countries. CZI and DEIK signed an Agreement to set up a Türkiye-Zimbabwe Business Council which has since became operational.
In terms of technical cooperation, Zimbabwe is grateful to the Government of Türkiye for the numerous scholarships it awards to Zimbabwean students in fields such as IT, Engineering, International Relations, Agriculture, Social Sciences, Economics and Medicine.
